How X counts characters

X doesn't count every character as one. It uses a weighted count, which is why an ordinary character counter can say 270 while X says you're over the limit. This counter uses twitter-text, X's own open-source counting library, so it follows the same rules:

Letters, numbers, punctuation (English, Spanish, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hindi, Thai…)1
Spaces and line breaks1
Emoji, including flags and skin tones2
Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters2
Most other symbols, such as … → ★2
Any link, long or short23

So a post written entirely in Japanese fits about 140 characters, and a link always costs 23 no matter how long it is. Read the full explanation in Twitter's character limit, explained.

Questions

What is the character limit on X (Twitter)?

280 for a normal post, reply or each post in a thread. X Premium subscribers can publish single long posts of up to 25,000 characters.

Do images, videos or GIFs count?

No. Attached media doesn't use any of the 280 characters.

My post is too long. What now?

Paste it into the Twitter thread maker. It splits the text into numbered posts that each fit, ending them at sentence breaks where it can.
