Why remove em dashes?
The em dash (—) is a perfectly good punctuation mark, but AI writing tools use it so often that many readers now see it as a sign a post was written by ChatGPT. Replacing it with a hyphen or a comma makes text read more like a person typed it.
What this tool changes
- Em dashes and spaced en dashes between words become the replacement you choose.
- Unspaced en dashes between words, like pre–war, become a hyphen.
- Number ranges like 2020–2024 become 2020-2024.
- A dash at the end of a line is removed. One at the start of a line becomes a hyphen bullet (with the hyphen option) or is removed.
- Optionally: invisible zero-width characters and non-breaking spaces, curly quotes, and the … character.
